I search for drama as well as lyricism when I choose a subject. Large forms such as bridges, power plants, and smoke stacks inspire me, and I am at home painting portraits and countryside, cityscape and industrial scenes. I see beauty in the grittiness of factories and industrial settings as well as natural subjects.

My primary concerns are with composition and color. Like the early German Expressionists who have influenced me, I like using contrasting vivid colors and heavy, dark outlines. I work quickly, usually completing a painting in one sitting, striving to capture the mood, air, light and atmosphere of the subject. Late afternoon is the best time for me because the light is more indirect and dramatic.
